Very few people move out while their house is painted, which means most interior jobs are an exercise in staying out of each other's way for a week. The difference between a smooth job and a miserable one is almost entirely logistics, and almost all of it is the crew's responsibility rather than yours.
The first decision is sequence. Painting a house one zone at a time — rather than opening up every room at once — means you always keep somewhere to live. We'd usually rather finish the bedrooms completely and hand them back than have five half-done rooms and nowhere to sleep on Thursday.
The second is protection. Furniture gets moved to the centre and covered, floors get papered along the working path rather than just inside the room, and hardware comes off doors instead of getting taped around. Taping around a hinge is how you end up with a line of paint on the brass.
The third is smell and air. Modern low-VOC interior paints are dramatically better than what was available fifteen years ago, and for occupied homes they're worth specifying. Even so, we plan ventilation, and we'll happily do the rooms with the strongest products while you're at work.
Then there's the daily reset. Tools packed up, drop cloths folded, a clear path through the house, and the kitchen usable. A site that stays half-unpacked overnight is a crew that's quietly telling you the schedule has slipped.
One thing that genuinely helps from your side: decide the colours before day one. Colour changes mid-job are the most common reason an interior repaint runs long, because a room already cut in has to be cut in again. Look at samples on your own walls, in your own light, at the time of day you actually use the room — and then commit.
